School Information
If a student is found during their cumulative time to be in possession, using, or being under the influence of any substance containing tobacco and/or nicotine or any paraphernalia intended for the manufacture, sale, and/or use of tobacco/nicotine products in any building/area under the control of the school system, including all activities or events sponsored by the county, shall by be subject to the following:
1st offense---3 day out of school suspension and Tobacco Cessation Class
2nd offense---5 day out of school suspension and Tobacco Cessation Class
3rd offense---45 day expulsion and placement in the Alternative Learning Center, banned from extracurricular activities (spectator or participant).
4th offense---365-day expulsion and placement at the ALC, banned from extracurricular activities (spectator or participant).
In all instances, parents/guardians and law enforcement shall be notified by building administration.
If a student is found to be in possession, distribution, using or being under the influence of any substance that is considered to be an illegal substance, narcotic or non-narcotic (this includes the possession, use, or distribution of electronic cigarettes or vaporizing devices that possess any level of THC) under WVDE Policy 4373 a Level 4 violation, the student:
Shall be recommended 365-day expulsion and placement within the ALC, banned from extracurricular activities (spectator or participant).
In all instances, parents/guardians and law enforcement shall be notified by building administration.
If a student appears to be under the influence of an illegal substance:
1. EMS shall be contacted immediately;
2. School nursing staff/school based clinical staff shall be notified;
3. Parent/guardian shall be contacted;
4. Law enforcement shall be notified;
5. Recommendation shall be made to the Board of Education for a 365-day expulsion and placement within the ALC, banned from extracurricular activities (spectator or participant).
The school system expects this information to provide clarity and insight to our families and students with the procedures the county will utilize moving forward. Again, please talk with your student and help us stop what has reached epidemic proportions among students in West Virginia and the country.
